Old Stone Fort State Archaeological Park
Tennessee State Archaeological Park · Manchester, Tennessee
A Middle Woodland ceremonial enclosure raised between roughly 80 and 550 AD on the bluff where the Big Duck and Little Duck rivers meet at Manchester — some 4,600 feet of earth and stone wall around fifty acres, and the most complex hilltop enclosure known anywhere in the South. It is not a fort and was never defended: no midden, no housing, no sign that anyone ever lived inside it. The nineteenth-century name was a guess that stuck. Waterfalls on both rivers are the other half of the visit.

Park open daily year round, free, generally 8 AM to sunset. Museum and visitor centre keep their own seasonal hours and are worth timing arrival around, since the site is difficult to interpret without them.
