Old Town Alexandria

Heritage District · Alexandria, Virginia

A tobacco port laid out in 1749 on the Potomac, and one of the first three districts in the United States to be made a National Historic Landmark — with Charleston and the French Quarter. King Street runs a mile from the Metro down to the water past eighteenth and nineteenth-century brick, and it is a working high street rather than a preserved one, which is what separates it from most historic districts.

221 King Street, Alexandria, Virginia, 22314, United States

District open at all hours; the free King Street trolley runs daily. Museums generally 10 AM - 5 PM with varying days — several are closed Mondays. The Torpedo Factory is generally open daily and free.
