Old Town San Diego State Historic Park
State Park · San Diego, California
Old Town San Diego State Historic Park preserves the area of the first European settlement in what is now San Diego, which grew under Spanish and Mexican rule from 1769 into the 1870s before the city moved toward the bay. The park is a few blocks of restored and reconstructed buildings around a plaza, including the Casa de Estudillo, a large adobe house, with small museums, a blacksmith shop and shops selling crafts. The Whaley House, said to be haunted, is a private museum nearby and charges admission, and a Mormon Battalion Visitor Center sits close by - confirm both. Mexican restaurants, margaritas, folk music and a hotel keep the streets busy, and prices lean toward tourists. Entry to the park is free (confirm), and free walking tours may run. It can be done in two to four hours, and the crowds peak on Cinco de Mayo and Dia de los Muertos. Parking is limited, so many people use the trolley or Coaster to the nearby transit centre.

The state park's outdoor plaza and streets are generally open all day, but the museums and historic buildings keep shorter hours, commonly from about 10 AM to 5 PM, and some close on certain days in the winter - confirm the exact times and any reduced schedule on the State Parks site. Restaurants and shops along the edge run later into the evening, with the busiest hours around lunch and early dinner. The Whaley House, the Mormon Battalion Visitor Center and the Cosmopolitan Hotel have their own hours, set separately from the park, so check each before you plan a visit. Free walking tours run only on posted days. Festival days such as Cinco de Mayo bring longer hours and street closures.
