Old Westbury Gardens
Formal Garden · Old Westbury, New York
A Charles II-style mansion of 1906 on two hundred acres of Nassau County, built for the financier John Shaffer Phipps and his English wife Margarita Grace, whose father's condition for the marriage was reportedly a house that would remind her of home. It is the most complete surviving GOLD COAST estate open to the public, the formal gardens are genuinely first-rate, and Westbury House still holds the family's furniture and paintings.
