Olympic National Forest

National Forest · Olympia, Washington

Roughly 628,000 acres in a broken ring around Olympic National Park, which means it holds most of the approaches to the Olympic Mountains and almost none of the fame. It runs from the rainforest valleys of the Quinault in the west to the dry rain-shadow slopes above Hood Canal in the east, a rainfall gradient of well over a hundred inches across sixty miles. It is also where dogs, mountain bikes and hunting are permitted, all of which the national park inside it prohibits.

1835 Black Lake Boulevard SW, Olympia, Washington, 98512, United States

Open year round, all hours. Lower-elevation roads and campgrounds along Hood Canal and the Quinault are generally usable all year; higher forest roads close with snow from late autumn. Ranger stations keep business hours. Storm damage regularly closes forest roads on the wet western side - check status before travelling.
