Omaha Children's Museum
Hands On Children'S Museum (Nonprofit) · Omaha, Nebraska
The Omaha Children's Museum is a nonprofit hands-on museum for young children on the southern edge of downtown Omaha, a short drive from the Old Market and the Joslyn Art Museum. It grew out of a small children's museum started in the 1970s (often dated to 1976; treat that as a claim) and has occupied its present large building on South 20th Street for decades. Inside are play-based galleries meant to be touched, climbed and splashed in: water play, science and engineering stations with balls and ramps, a construction area, an art studio and a separate space for toddlers and babies, plus a travelling exhibition that changes a few times a year. It is aimed squarely at children from roughly one to ten and the adults with them, and it does that job well. For older children, teenagers and adults without children there is little here, and on school holidays and rainy weekends it is crowded and loud. For families with small children it is one of the best indoor half-days in Omaha, especially in the heat of summer or the cold of winter.

NO OPENING TIME HERE WAS CHECKED. The typical pattern: open roughly 9 or 10 am to 4 or 5 pm on most days, with shorter Sunday hours, often closed on Mondays in the school year, longer summer schedules and closures on major holidays such as Thanksgiving and Christmas. Special events, installation of a new travelling exhibition or private bookings can close part or all of the building. The traps that ruin a day are arriving on a closed Monday, reaching a full building at noon on a rainy Saturday and finding the travelling exhibit between shows. Confirm current times before relying on them.
