Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium
AZA Accredited Zoo And Aquarium (Omaha Zoological Society) · Omaha, Nebraska
Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium is a large zoo and aquarium on the south side of Omaha, a few minutes from downtown and Interstate 80, run by the non-profit Omaha Zoological Society. It began in 1894 as a small animal collection in Riverview Park and took the Doorly name after a gift from the family of Henry Doorly, a former publisher of the Omaha World-Herald, in the 1960s. Over the following decades it grew into one of the most ambitious zoos in the country, and it is best known for huge indoor habitats: the Desert Dome, often described as the world's largest indoor desert, with the nocturnal Kingdoms of the Night beneath it; the Lied Jungle, one of the largest indoor rainforests; and the Suzanne and Walter Scott Aquarium with its walk-through shark tunnel. Outdoors, it covers more than 130 hilly acres, with gorillas, orangutans, big cats, bears, sea lions and an African savanna. Because so much is indoors, it works in heat, rain and winter. Expect a long day of walking on real slopes.

NO OPENING TIME HERE WAS CHECKED. The typical pattern: open every day of the year except around Christmas, with gates opening about 9 am and closing about 5 pm and ticket sales ending about an hour before closing. Indoor exhibits and the aquarium may close before the grounds. The Skyfari and the zoo railroad run only in the warmer months and stop in wind and storms. The traps that ruin a day are arriving at midday in July to full lots and packed indoor exhibits, arriving an hour before closing and finding ticket sales over, planning a ride that is not running, and driving to the separate Safari Park by mistake. Confirm current times before relying on them.
