Omi Hachiman, A Merchant Town Of Shiga Beside Lake Biwa With A Willow Lined Moat, Old Merchant Houses And, From The Hilltop Ropeway, A View Over The Lake And The Reed Beds. A Slow Day Trip From Kyoto And Osaka. · Omihachiman, Shiga
Omi-Hachiman is a quiet merchant town in Shiga, on the eastern shore of Lake Biwa, whose old centre is built around the Hachiman-bori, a willow-lined moat with stone steps and wooden boats. Merchants from here, the Omi shonin, once travelled the country trading, and their old houses and warehouses line the lanes behind the water. Himure Hachimangu shrine, a short walk away, and the Hachimanyama ropeway, which rises to the ruins of a castle with a view over the town and lake, add a second layer. Reed beds at Nishi-no-ko, a lagoon, can be seen on a boat ride - confirm seasons. The American architect William Merrell Vories, who lived here, left Western-style buildings among the old houses. It suits slow walkers, photographers and anyone avoiding Kyoto crowds, and takes half a day. It is worth the detour from Kyoto or Osaka by the JR line; it is not a place for nightlife, and shops often close early.

The old streets and the moat are open all day and free to walk, but small museums, merchant houses and shops commonly keep roughly 09:00 to 16:30 hours and close one weekday, often Monday - confirm each place. The ropeway runs most of the day with a break for maintenance on some days - confirm. Boat rides on the moat and in the reeds run on set seasons and weather - confirm and book if possible. From Omi-Hachiman Station on the JR Biwako Line, take a local bus or walk roughly 20 minutes to the moat. IC cards work on JR and buses, but cash is needed in small shops and cafes.
