The last of the great wooden-era grand hotels of the White Mountains, a white stucco building with a long red roof standing alone on a meadow at Bretton Woods, with the Presidential Range and Mount Washington rising straight behind it. It opened in 1902, built by the coal and railway magnate Joseph Stickney with a steel frame, electric light and a private power plant that were remarkable for the time, and it is now a National Historic Landmark. In July 1944 it hosted the United Nations Monetary and Financial Conference, where delegates from the Allied nations agreed the Bretton Woods system of fixed exchange rates and created the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank; the Gold Room where agreements were signed can still be seen. Today it is a year-round resort with a long veranda, a formal main dining room, a large spa, two golf courses and, across Route 302, Bretton Woods, the largest ski area in New Hampshire, which also runs a summer canopy zip tour. Non-guests can visit for a meal, a drink on the veranda or a history tour.
