Orchard Beach

Beach · Bronx, New York

⚠ THE BRONX RIVIERA — a mile-long crescent of beach on Long Island Sound, built by ROBERT MOSES in the 1930s by joining two islands with landfill and barging in sand from the Rockaways and New Jersey. Its monumental Art Deco BATHHOUSE AND PAVILION is a WPA-era civic statement, and on a summer Sunday the beach is one of the great public spectacles in New York.

Orchard Beach Road, Bronx, New York, 10464, United States

⚠ THE BEACH IS FREE; THE CAR PARK CHARGES IN SUMMER. Open year round — the promenade and pavilion are accessible at all times — but ⚠ SWIMMING IS PERMITTED ONLY WHEN LIFEGUARDS ARE ON DUTY, roughly late May to early September during posted hours, and this is enforced. ⚠ NEW YORK CITY LIFEGUARD SHORTAGES HAVE AFFECTED HOURS AND GUARDED SECTIONS in recent seasons — check the NYC Parks beaches page. ⚠ THE 6 TRAIN TERMINUS AT PELHAM BAY PARK IS NOT THE BEACH: it is a further Bx29 or summer Bx12 bus ride into a 2,772-acre park. Allow 75-90 minutes from Midtown.
