Orchard Beach State Park

Michigan State Park · Manistee, Michigan

Orchard Beach State Park sits on a high bluff above Lake Michigan just north of Manistee, in the northwest of the Lower Peninsula. It is a campground-and-view park rather than a swimming park: the main draws are the bluff-top setting, shaded camping among old trees, short walks, and sunsets over the lake. A long staircase has historically led down to the beach, but bluff erosion and high water have damaged or closed access at times, so confirm whether the stairs and shore are usable before you plan to swim. Manistee's historic downtown and riverwalk are a short drive away, and the Huron-Manistee National Forests lie inland. It suits campers, families, sunset watchers and anyone who wants a quiet, low-cost base. Keep well back from the bluff edge, which is steep and unstable. A Recreation Passport is required. Confirm facilities, site counts, fees and whether the beach stairs are open this year.

Michigan state parks are generally open daily from about 8 AM to 10 PM for day use, and campers may stay overnight on their reservation. Orchard Beach's campground is usually open from late spring to early autumn, with reduced services in the cold months, so confirm the season, which loops are open and whether the beach stairs are open with the Michigan DNR. A Recreation Passport is required on every vehicle. Weather on the Lake Michigan shore can change quickly, and storms in fall and winter may close facilities or make roads icy. Sunset is the busiest time on the bluff in summer, so arrive early if you want a good spot near the viewing area.
