Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area
Public Land · Reedsport, Oregon
Forty miles of coastal sand dunes between Florence and Coos Bay, the largest expanse of coastal dunes in North America, with some rising 500 feet above sea level. They were built by wind and the erosion of the Coast Range over millions of years and are now moving inland faster than they are being replaced, as European beachgrass planted a century ago stabilises the foredune and cuts off the sand supply. Frank Herbert came here in 1957 to write about shifting sand and the visit became Dune.
855 Highway Avenue, Reedsport, Oregon, 97467, United States
Open 24 hours a day, year round, across about 40 miles of coast. A day-use fee or Northwest Forest Pass applies at most developed sites and campgrounds are seasonal and reservable. ⚠ ROUGHLY HALF THE RECREATION AREA IS OPEN TO OFF-HIGHWAY VEHICLES AND HALF IS NOT - check which area you are heading for before you travel, because it changes the visit completely. ⚠ SEASONAL CLOSURES PROTECT NESTING WESTERN SNOWY PLOVER on parts of the beach and foredune from roughly March to September and are strictly enforced. The recreation area is part of Siuslaw National Forest and is administered from Corvallis, about two hours inland.
