Oregon Shakespeare Festival

Theater · Ashland, Oregon

A repertory theatre company in Ashland, founded in 1935 by Angus Bowmer on the walls of a derelict Chautauqua building, which grew into one of the oldest and largest professional theatres in the United States. It runs five to eleven plays in daily rotation across three houses from roughly March to October, including an 1,190-seat Elizabethan stage that is open to the sky. Only some of the programme is Shakespeare; the rest is classic and contemporary work, and the new-play commissioning has national weight.

15 South Pioneer Street, Ashland, Oregon, 97520, United States

⚠ STRICTLY SEASONAL - the festival runs roughly March to October and there is no theatre outside that window. Five to eleven plays run in DAILY ROTATION across three houses, so which plays you can see depends entirely on which nights you are in Ashland; check the calendar before booking lodging. The outdoor Allen Elizabethan Theatre operates in summer only, is uncovered, and performances go ahead in cold weather. ⚠ THE COMPANY HAS BEEN THROUGH SERIOUS FINANCIAL DIFFICULTY and season length and play counts have varied year to year - check the current programme rather than the reputation. The free Green Show runs on the plaza before evening performances.
