Oregon State Capitol

Historic Site · Salem, Oregon

The third capitol Oregon has built in Salem, the first two having burned in 1855 and 1935. This one was finished in 1938 in a stripped Art Deco style faced in white Vermont marble, and it is topped not by a dome but by a squat cylindrical tower carrying a 23-foot gilded bronze figure of a pioneer with an axe. Four large murals of Oregon history line the rotunda, and the tower can be climbed in season.
