State Historic Sites; The Oregon Trail Ruts Are A National Historic Landmark · Guernsey, Wyoming
Two State Historic Sites a few miles apart near Guernsey, where the emigrant trail crossed soft sandstone above the North Platte River. At the Oregon Trail Ruts, a National Historic Landmark, the wheels of countless wagons wore grooves several feet deep into the rock — the most vivid physical trace left anywhere along the trail. At Register Cliff, emigrants camped by the river carved and painted their names and dates into a sandstone bluff in the 1840s and 1850s. Both are free and a short walk from the car park. Both are free Wyoming State Historic Sites a few minutes' drive south of Guernsey, with parking, signs and short paths, and Fort Laramie is about 15 miles east.
