Portland's zoo, in Washington Park about two miles south-west of downtown. It was founded in 1888 as the Portland Zoo, later became the Washington Park Zoo, and is the oldest zoo west of the Mississippi River. It has a strong conservation and breeding record and its exhibits lean toward Pacific Northwest and Asian species, with the elephant programme its most prominent and most argued-over work.

Open daily with seasonal hours - longer in summer, shorter in winter - and a small number of closed days a year. ⚠ LAST ENTRY IS BEFORE CLOSING and the animals go in ahead of that, so a late arrival is a poor visit. Summer concert evenings change the operation. Check the day before travelling.
