Oresund Bridge

The Cable Stayed Road And Rail Bridge Of 2000 That, With An Artificial Island And A Tunnel, Links Sweden To Denmark Across The Oresund The Landmark Of The Television Series The Bridge · Malmo, Skane County

The Oresund Bridge is the road and rail link between Malmo in Sweden and Copenhagen in Denmark, opened in July 2000. It is only one part of a fixed link of roughly 16 km: from the Swedish shore at Lernacken a cable-stayed bridge of about 8 km, with a main span hung from two tall pylons, carries the E20 motorway on its upper deck and a double-track railway below. It comes down on Peberholm, an artificial island built from the dredged seabed, and the traffic then drops into the Drogden tunnel, about 4 km long, which surfaces beside Copenhagen Airport at Kastrup. The tunnel keeps the flight paths and the shipping lane clear. The link turned Malmo and Copenhagen into one commuting region, and the Nordic crime series The Bridge (Bron in Swedish, Broen in Danish), which opens with a body found at the border midway across, made it famous worldwide. People come to cross it by train, to drive it once, and to photograph it at sunset from the Malmo beaches. The honest caveat: there is nothing to visit on the bridge itself, you cannot walk or cycle it, and the car toll is steep.

The bridge is open 24 hours a day, every day of the year, for cars and trains; there is no visitor centre or viewing platform on the structure itself. Very strong wind can close it to high-sided vehicles, caravans and motorcycles, and in rare storms to all traffic - check the traffic status before driving in a gale. Oresundstag trains run from Malmo C via Triangeln and Hyllie to Copenhagen Airport and Copenhagen Central in roughly 35-40 minutes, typically every 20 minutes by day and less often at night, with engineering work sometimes replacing trains with buses at weekends. The car toll plaza is on the Swedish side at Lernacken and is paid per crossing by card or with a tag or commuter agreement. Nothing needs to be booked, but a discount agreement must be arranged in advance. Carry ID: border checks on the train or at the toll plaza come and go.
