Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument
National Monument · Ajo, Arizona
A wilderness of Sonoran Desert on the Mexican border south of Ajo, protecting the only large stands of organ pipe cactus in the United States along with saguaro, senita cactus and rare desert springs. It is an international biosphere reserve. The 21-mile Ajo Mountain Drive and Twin Peaks Campground draw winter visitors, when temperatures are mild and wildflowers bloom. The visitor centre is named for ranger Kris Eggle, killed in the line of duty in 2002. Since 31 July 2026 six roads near the border — including the Puerto Blanco roads, Senita Basin Road and the routes to Quitobaquito Springs — have been closed indefinitely during border wall construction. Summer heat is extreme.
