Ortahisar Castle
A Large Natural Rock Fortress Hollowed Into Rooms And Passages, With A Staircase To The Top And Panoramic Views Of Cappadocia And Mount Erciyes. A Quieter Lookout Than Uchisar, With Cave Storage Rooms For Local Citrus And Potatoes In The Village Below · Ortahisar, Nevsehir
Ortahisar Castle is a huge natural rock fortress at the heart of Ortahisar, a small village about 6 to 8 km from Urgup and a similar distance from Goreme in Cappadocia. The whole outcrop is hollowed into rooms, passages and stairs cut into soft volcanic tuff, and in earlier centuries it served as a refuge and lookout over the plain. A stair climbs through the rock to a top platform with wide views over the village roofs, the valleys toward Goreme and, on clear days, the snowy cone of Mount Erciyes. Many of the rooms inside were used for generations as cool stores for citrus fruit and potatoes brought from other regions (confirm), which gave the village an unusual role as a produce depot. Around the base are stone houses, tea gardens and a few small shops, and the village feels much quieter than Uchisar or Goreme. Ortahisar suits a short climb, a tea in the square and a walk into Pigeon Valley, with fewer coaches and a slower pace.
