Osaka

Japan'S Third Largest City; The Commercial Hub Of Kansai · Osaka, Osaka

Japan's third-largest city and the hub of the Kansai region, a merchant city with a reputation as the loudest, friendliest and hungriest place in the country; its motto, kuidaore, means to eat until you drop. The heart of it for visitors is Dotonbori, a canal lined with giant neon signs, the famous running man and crab signs, and stalls selling takoyaki octopus balls and okonomiyaki. Nearby, Shinsaibashi's covered arcade and Kuromon market are for shopping and eating, and Shinsekai, under the Tsutenkaku tower, has an older, retro feel with kushikatsu skewers. Osaka Castle, rebuilt in concrete in the twentieth century, stands in a large park that fills with cherry blossom in spring. Universal Studios Japan, with its Super Nintendo World, is one of the busiest theme parks in Asia. The Umeda Sky Building gives the classic city view. Osaka is also a convenient base: Kyoto is thirty minutes by train, Nara and Kobe under an hour, and Kansai airport handles many international flights. The Expo 2025 site on Yumeshima island lies in the bay.
