Ostersund and Jamtli
Jamtland'S Lake Shore Capital: Jamtli Open Air Museum With The Overhogdal Tapestries, Lake Storsjon Of The Monster Legend, And Froson'S Rune Stone, Sweden'S Northernmost · Ostersund, Jamtland County
Ostersund is the capital of Jamtland, a lively town of cafes and old wooden houses on the eastern shore of Lake Storsjon, looking across to the island of Froson and the mountains beyond. Above the town sits Jamtli, an open-air museum of farmhouses, workshops and townhouses moved here from around the county, where costumed staff play out past eras in summer in what is often called Historieland - confirm the summer program. Indoors Jamtli holds the Overhogdal tapestries, Viking-age textiles often described as among the most important in Scandinavia. The lake has its own monster legend, Storsjoodjuret, and on Froson stands the Froso rune stone, Sweden's northernmost. Ostersund is also a UNESCO City of Gastronomy and a winter sports town. The honest caveat: this is a pleasant regional town rather than a headline destination, and it is best in summer or deep winter; in the grey shoulder seasons it can feel quiet.

Jamtli is open all year; in summer, roughly late June to mid August, it opens daily with the costumed program outdoors, and the rest of the year the indoor exhibitions open with shorter hours and a closed day, often Monday - check the current schedule. The steamship Thomee sails on Lake Storsjon in summer only - confirm the timetable. The Froso rune stone, the bridge and Froson's viewpoints are open at any time. Getting there: SJ trains from Stockholm take about 5 hours, and the night train toward Are stops here; Are Ostersund Airport on Froson has flights from Stockholm. Book rooms well ahead for Storsjoyran in late July and for major biathlon events.
