Our Lady of the Rockies
Shrine · Butte, Montana
A ninety-foot white statue standing on the Continental Divide at eighty-five hundred feet above Butte, visible from the whole valley and lit at night. A local man promised it in 1979 when his wife recovered from illness, and it was then built over six years entirely by volunteers — unemployed miners, welders and truckers, in a town that had just lost its mine — and flown to the summit in four pieces by a National Guard helicopter in December 1985. It is dedicated to all women, and especially to mothers, of every faith or none.
3100 Harrison Avenue, Butte, Montana, 59701, United States
Access to the statue is BY OFFICIAL BUS TOUR ONLY, departing from the gift shop in Butte, booked in advance and running seasonally from roughly June to early October — the road is private and gated and cannot be driven, walked or cycled. Tours take two to three hours and do not run in winter or in poor weather. The gift shop and its construction history displays are free. The statue is floodlit at night and visible from across Butte at no cost, which is how most people see it.
