Owls Head Transportation Museum
Specialty Museum · Owls Head, Maine
A transportation museum next to Rockland's airport, founded in 1974 by the Owls Head Foundation after a suggestion by Thomas J. Watson Jr. of IBM, who had a home nearby. Its mission is pre-1940 aircraft, ground vehicles and engines, and its distinguishing feature is that it operates them: on event weekends the aeroplanes fly and the cars are driven, which almost no comparable collection does.
117 Museum Street, Owls Head, Maine, 04854, United States
Open year-round most days, with reduced winter hours; check before travelling. ⚠ THE POINT OF THIS MUSEUM IS THE EVENTS, and they are seasonal - the summer and autumn weekends when the aircraft fly and the vehicles are driven. A quiet weekday in February is a very different and much smaller experience from an event Saturday in August.
