Pa Hin Ngam National Park

Pa Hin Ngam National Park A Stone Forest And Fields Of Siam Tulips (Krachiao), Blooming Roughly June To August · Thep Sathit, Chaiyaphum

Pa Hin Ngam National Park lies on the western edge of Chaiyaphum province in Thailand's north-east, where the Isaan plateau breaks off in cliffs above the central plain. Its name means forest of beautiful rocks, after a stone garden of weathered sandstone outcrops in strange shapes scattered through dry dipterocarp forest. It is best known for its krachiao, the Siam tulip, a wild relative of turmeric whose pink bracts cover open fields in the park during the rainy season, roughly June to August, when a flower festival draws crowds of Thai visitors on weekends. At the edge of the plateau, the Sut Phaen Din viewpoint, whose name means the end of the earth, looks out from a cliff across a wide sweep of forest and plain, and in the cool season it can look over a sea of mist at dawn. The park has campsites and tents for hire, and nights on the plateau are cold from December to February. Nearby Sai Thong National Park has krachiao fields too. A car is almost essential.

NO OPENING TIME HERE WAS CHECKED. The typical pattern: the park gate is open daily from about 6 or 8 am to about 6 pm for day visitors, with campers staying overnight, and no weekly closing day known; the krachiao festival runs on dates set each year in the rainy season, usually with longer weekend hours and extra services. Some Thai national parks close sections or whole areas for a few months for recovery, usually in the rainy season; check that Pa Hin Ngam and its fields are open. The traps that ruin a day are driving several hours to find the fields not yet in bloom, arriving at midday on a festival weekend into traffic and crowds, reaching the park too late to hire a tent, and relying on public transport that does not reach the gate. Confirm current times before relying on them.
