Pa Phru To Daeng
Thailand'S Largest Remaining Peat Swamp Forest; Travel Advisories Apply To Narathiwat Province · Su-ngai Kolok, Narathiwat
Pa Phru To Daeng is the largest remaining peat swamp forest in Thailand, a waterlogged jungle in Narathiwat province on the far southern border with Malaysia, a short way from the frontier town of Su-ngai Kolok. Its trees grow on a deep bed of soft, spongy peat built from thousands of years of fallen leaves and wood, laced with tea-brown water, stilt roots, rattan palms and pitcher plants, and it shelters primates and birds of the Malay peninsula. A study centre named after Princess Sirindhorn has run a raised boardwalk into the forest. TRAVEL ADVICE: Narathiwat, with Pattani and Yala, is the scene of a long-running insurgency, and Su-ngai Kolok itself has seen bombings; many governments advise against all but essential travel to these provinces, and travel insurance may not cover you. Check your government's current advisory and your insurer before considering a visit, and expect facilities to be closed or limited; tourism infrastructure is very thin. Malay-Muslim culture, the crossing to Rantau Panjang in Malaysia and the coast at Tak Bai lie close by.

NO OPENING TIME HERE WAS CHECKED. TRAVEL ADVISORIES APPLY: check your government's current advice for Narathiwat before any visit. The typical pattern: the Sirindhorn peat swamp forest nature study centre and its boardwalk have opened during daytime, roughly 8:30 am to 4:30 pm, but opening has been reduced or suspended at times because of security concerns, floods, fire or repairs, and may close without notice; the exhibition may keep weekday or shorter hours. Border crossings to Malaysia keep set hours and close at night. The traps are travelling without checking the advice or your insurance, finding the centre closed after a long journey, being on the road after dark, arriving in the heat of the afternoon, and reaching the border after it has closed. Confirm current times before relying on them.
