Pabst Mansion

Manor · Milwaukee, Wisconsin

The Flemish Renaissance Revival house Captain Frederick Pabst built for himself on Grand Avenue in 1892, at the point when Milwaukee brewing money could buy anything and this street was lined with houses like it. Thirty-seven rooms, carved woodwork throughout, and an ornamental pavilion on the side that Pabst had shipped back from the company's stand at the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago. It is the only one of the Grand Avenue mansions left, and it survived because a demolition order in 1975 was fought off at the last minute.
