Pacheco State Park

State Park · Hollister, California

Pacheco State Park is a large, lightly developed California State Parks unit of rolling oak and grassland hills on the Pacheco Pass area of Highway 152, between Gilroy and Los Banos, and it spans parts of Santa Clara and Merced counties. It has a ranching past - confirm the history - and today it offers hiking and equestrian trails, wide views and spring wildflowers when winter rain has been good. It is a quiet park with limited facilities, so bring your own water and supplies and confirm what is open. Summers are hot and dry, and rattlesnakes, ticks and wild pigs are all part of the scene. Henry W. Coe State Park is a separate park nearby, reached from Morgan Hill, and should not be confused with this one. A California State Parks day-use fee may apply - confirm it and the hours. Come for open space and quiet, not for a visitor center or shade. Wildflower years are the exception to the usual dry look.

California State Parks day-use areas have usually been open from around sunrise to sunset, and Pacheco has typically been a day-use and limited camping park with an unstaffed or lightly staffed entrance - confirm the current hours, the fee system and whether any gates close earlier in winter. Some trailheads and areas close during wet weather, high fire danger or maintenance, and sections of the park can be shut for long periods without much notice. Phone signal can be poor on the hills, and Highway 152 is a heavy truck route that can close for accidents, fog, snow or wildfire. Check the official State Parks page and road conditions before you leave.
