Pacific Science Center

Science Museum · Seattle, Washington

The science museum at Seattle Center, in Minoru Yamasaki's 1962 World's Fair pavilion - five buildings around a courtyard of white precast arches and reflecting pools, which is the most architecturally distinguished thing about it. Inside it is a hands-on centre pitched squarely at children: a tropical butterfly house, a working laser dome, IMAX screens and a large exhibit floor. Adults visiting without children will find it thin; families will find it one of the better wet-afternoon options in the city.

200 Second Avenue North, Seattle, Washington, 98109, United States

Generally 10 AM to 5 PM, with reduced days outside summer - it has run a Wednesday-to-Sunday schedule at times, so CHECK BEFORE TRAVELLING rather than assuming daily opening. IMAX and planetarium showings run to their own timetable and sell out at weekends. Closed Thanksgiving and Christmas Day.
