Paghman Gardens
Formal Garden · Paghman, Kabul
Kabul's hill station: a green mountain valley 20-odd kilometres west of the capital that King Amanullah rebuilt in the 1920s as a European-styled summer retreat — formal gardens, poplar avenues, villas and a Victory Arch commemorating independence in 1919 that still presides over the central square. Wrecked in the civil war and replanted since, it runs on snowmelt streams, riverside restaurants and weekend picnics, with the hilltop palace of 2014 and its surrounding gardens charging admission under the current administration. Since November 2022, Afghan women have been barred from Kabul's recreation areas.
