Paint Lake Provincial Park

A Northern Boreal Lake Park With A Beach, Campground, Boat Launch, Trails And Fishing For Walleye And Northern Pike, A Favourite Summer Place For Thompson. Reached By A Good Highway Through Spruce And Bog · Thompson, Manitoba

Paint Lake Provincial Park sits on the shore of Paint Lake beside Highway 6, roughly 40 km south of Thompson in northern Manitoba, a drive of about 30 to 40 minutes from the city (confirm distance). The lake is a big, island-dotted sheet of Canadian Shield water in boreal country of black spruce, jack pine, tamarack and bog, and for the nickel-mining people of Thompson it is the nearest place to swim, boat, fish and camp. A sandy beach, a campground set among the trees, a boat launch, a handful of short walking trails and fishing for walleye and northern pike make it a full summer park, while the long northern days of June and July stretch into pale evenings. In winter the lake freezes for ice fishing, and the dark sky over the shore is a fine place to watch the northern lights. A park vehicle permit is needed for day use, and camping is booked through Manitoba Parks (confirm all prices and dates).

Paint Lake Provincial Park, on Highway 6 about 40 km south of Thompson in northern Manitoba beside Paint Lake; coordinates approximate, Thompson, Manitoba, Canada

Paint Lake is a summer park, with the beach, campground and park office generally staffed from about mid May to early September, and shorter services in spring and autumn, so confirm dates with Manitoba Parks before a long drive. Day use follows daylight, and campers follow check-in and check-out times set at booking (confirm). The highway stays open all year, but many services close in winter, while the frozen lake draws ice anglers and snowmobilers when the ice is safe. Daylight lasts very late in June and ends early in December, and the park office may not answer outside the season.
