Palace of Fine Arts

Historic Site · San Francisco, California

A Roman ruin that was never a ruin — Bernard Maybeck built it in 1915 for the Panama-Pacific International Exposition, deliberately designed to look like a decaying classical palace reflected in a lagoon. It was the only structure from the fair kept on its site, and though the original plaster crumbled as intended, San Francisco rebuilt it permanently in concrete. Free, and open at all hours.

3601 Lyon Street, San Francisco, California, 94123, United States

Open 24 hours daily. Free.
