Palisades State Park
Subnational Park · Garretson, South Dakota
Sheer pink quartzite cliffs up to fifty feet high standing over Split Rock Creek, ten miles off Interstate 90 near Garretson. At 435 acres it is the second-smallest state park in South Dakota and one of the strangest - the same 1.2-billion-year-old Sioux quartzite that makes the falls at Sioux Falls, here cut into a narrow gorge with formations that look nothing like the surrounding prairie.
485th Avenue, Garretson, South Dakota, 57030, United States
Open year round, dawn to dusk. ⚠ A SOUTH DAKOTA PARK ENTRANCE LICENCE IS REQUIRED, charged per vehicle. The campground is seasonal and small. ⚠ THIS IS ROCK-CLIMBING TERRAIN AND THE CLIFFS ARE UNFENCED - it is a small park with real drops, and that combination catches people out.
