Palmer House
Historic Site · Chicago, Illinois
The longest continuously operating hotel in North America, and the second building on the site — Potter Palmer opened the first as a wedding present to his wife Bertha in September 1871 and the Great Fire destroyed it thirteen days later. The current building went up in 1925, its lobby ceiling was painted by a French muralist, and the brownie was invented in its kitchen for the 1893 World's Fair.
