Palo Alto Battlefield National Historical Park
Battlefield · Brownsville, Texas
The coastal prairie north of Brownsville where Zachary Taylor's artillery broke Mariano Arista's larger Mexican force on 8 May 1846 — the first major battle of the US-Mexican War, a war that ended with Mexico ceding half its territory and the United States reaching the Pacific. It is the only National Park Service unit anywhere that represents that war, it covers about 3,400 acres across two battlefields, and it is free.
