Palomar Mountain State Park

State Park · Palomar Mountain, California

Palomar Mountain State Park sits high in the Palomar Mountains of northern San Diego County, at roughly 5,000 to 6,000 feet, where oak, pine and cedar forest replaces the dry scrub of the valleys below. The setting feels closer to a Sierra foothill than to Southern California: shaded paths, small meadows, a pond used for trout fishing - confirm the rules - and a campground under tall trees - confirm size and booking. Air here is often much cooler than on the coast or in the inland valleys, so it is a popular escape when the lowlands are hot, and winter can bring real snow and icy roads. The famous Palomar Observatory, home of the 200-inch Hale telescope run by Caltech, is nearby but is a separate site - confirm visitor access. Reaching the park means a long, steep, winding mountain road, so allow time and check conditions before you drive. It suits families, campers and anglers who want shade and quiet rather than a big attraction.

California State Parks has generally run Palomar Mountain as a day-use park from around morning until sunset, with the campground following its own check-in times - confirm the current hours, whether a kiosk is staffed and whether a self-serve fee box is used when it is not. The mountain road can close or require chains after winter snow or ice, and storms or wildfire in the surrounding forest can shut the park or individual trails at short notice. Summer days are pleasant but afternoon thunderstorms can build over the peaks, and nights are cold even in July. Staffing is modest, so do not count on a shop, a ranger at every trailhead or a phone signal. Check the State Parks page and the road status on the morning you drive, and allow extra time for the climb.
