Panam City
Heritage Village · Sonargaon, Dhaka
A single street of some fifty decaying merchant mansions at Sonargaon, the medieval capital of Bengal - built mostly by Hindu cloth merchants in the nineteenth century on the profits of the muslin and cotton trade, abandoned in waves through Partition and 1965, and left standing as the most atmospheric ruin-street in the country. Colonnaded facades, plaster scrollwork and brick skeletons line both sides of the old road, with the wider Sonargaon complex - the Folk Art and Crafts Museum in the Sardar Bari palace, ponds and pavilions - next door. It is the best single day trip out of Dhaka, and it photographs like nowhere else in Bengal.
