Pancake Bay Provincial Park
A Big Sandy Beach On Lake Superior With A Campground, A Visitor Centre, Dune And Forest Trails, And Sunsets Over The Lake. One Of The Best Sand Beaches On The Lake Superior Drive, Though The Water Stays Cold · Batchawana Bay, Ontario
Pancake Bay Provincial Park sits right beside the Trans-Canada Highway on the Lake Superior shore, roughly 70 km north of Sault Ste. Marie, at the southern edge of the great wilderness that runs up to Lake Superior Provincial Park (confirm distance). The big draw is the bay itself: a long, gently curved beach of fine pale sand, shallow near the edge and shaded by the green wall of boreal forest behind, with a view across open water to a wide, empty horizon. A campground tucked among the trees, a visitor centre in season and short walking trails through dunes and forest make the park an easy and popular break on the Lake Superior circle drive. The bay gets its name from the voyageurs, who are said to have stopped here to make pancakes from the last of their flour, and the story still shapes the park identity. Lake Superior stays cold all summer, but this sheltered bay warms more than most, and the sunsets are famous. Ontario Parks sets the rates (confirm all fees and dates).

Pancake Bay runs as a seasonal Ontario Parks site, with the campground, beach and visitor centre open from about mid May to early October, and the busiest weeks in July and August (confirm dates). Day use follows daylight, and campers follow the check-in and check-out times given at booking. The office and gate may be unstaffed outside the season, and snowbound winter access is limited to what the highway and weather allow. Daylight lasts past ten on a June evening and ends before five in December, so plan beach time around the sun.
