Pantanos de Centla Biosphere Reserve
A UNESCO Biosphere Reserve (2006), The Largest Wetland In Mesoamerica, An Immense Maze Of Lagoons, Marshes, Mangrove And Floodplain At The Mouth Of Mexico'S Biggest Rivers, With Manatees, Howler And Spider Monkeys, Crocodiles And Migratory Birds. Visited By Boat With Local Guides From Frontera Or The Interpretation Centre Near Villahermosa · Frontera, Tabasco
Pantanos de Centla is a UNESCO biosphere reserve and the largest wetland in Mesoamerica, a maze of lagoons, marshes, mangrove and floodplain where the Usumacinta and Grijalva rivers, the biggest in Mexico, meet before the Gulf. It lies near Frontera in Tabasco, roughly 100 km north of Villahermosa. Visits are by boat, with local guides from Frontera or from the interpretation centre near the reserve (confirm the name and whether it is open), and the reward is wildlife: manatees, howler and spider monkeys, crocodiles, water birds and migratory flocks. Sightings are never guaranteed, and the water is brown and the landscape flat. Heat and humidity are heavy, mosquitoes are constant, and floods in September to November can close access. It suits patient birders, nature photographers and people who like quiet water. It is worth the detour if you are in Villahermosa with a free day; if you want easy, close-up animals, a zoo is a better choice.

Boat trips normally leave in the morning, when it is cooler and animals are active, and again in the late afternoon. The interpretation centre, if open, keeps daytime hours and is CLOSED on some weekdays, so confirm locally. Reserve tracks and the open roads are FREE to drive or look at from the side, but the reserve itself has no fixed gate, and guides set their own times. Boat trips are CLOSED or limited in high flood from September to November, in storms and at night, and some areas of the core zone are CLOSED to visitors altogether to protect wildlife.
