Reserve faunique Papineau-Labelle is a large Sepaq wildlife reserve in the Outaouais and Laurentians of Quebec, roughly 130 km north of Ottawa-Gatineau and reached from villages such as Chute-Saint-Philippe and Saint-Aime-du-Lac-des-Iles (confirm). It covers roughly 1,600 square kilometres of rolling forested hills with hundreds of lakes, rivers and beaver ponds (confirm the area), and the forest is mostly sugar maple, yellow birch and balsam fir. Unlike a national park, it is a working reserve where fishing and hunting are managed by season and quota, so anglers chase brook trout, walleye and lake trout, while hikers and paddlers use trails and canoe routes. Cabins, campsites and canoe-camping sites are booked through Sepaq. The reserve is a quiet, wild alternative to busier parks near Mont-Tremblant, with moose, black bears and wolves. Entry and activity fees apply (confirm all prices).

Papineau-Labelle is open through most of the warm season, generally from about mid May to mid October, with reception posts staffed in the daytime and shorter hours in spring and autumn, so confirm times with Sepaq before a long drive. Hunting seasons in autumn change who is on the roads and trails, so check the dates. In winter parts of the reserve open to snowmobile, ski and ice fishing guests when snow and ice allow (confirm). Cabins and campsites must be booked in advance, and cell coverage is limited, so arrive before dark and confirm the route to your site.
