Parras and Casa Madero
Pueblo MáGico / Bodega MáS Antigua De AméRica · Parras de la Fuente, Coahuila
An oasis town in the Coahuila desert, about 1,500 metres up, where springs feed vineyards and walnut groves. Parras is the home of Casa Madero, founded in 1597 as the Hacienda de San Lorenzo and the oldest winery in the Americas still in production. Parras - the name means grapevines - is a Pueblo Magico of spring-fed pools, colonial streets and sweet shops, and the birthplace of Francisco I. Madero, whose family owned the winery and who launched the Mexican Revolution in 1910. On a rocky hill above town stands a chapel, the Santo Madero, with the whole green oasis laid out below. You can tour and taste at Casa Madero, which is a short drive from town, swim at Estanque La Luz and buy dulces of candied fruit, walnut and quince. August brings the Vendimia grape harvest festival, but it is hot. The highways are long and empty, so check current state travel advice and drive by day. Winter nights are cold, summer days are hot, spring and autumn are best.
