An hour and a half from Johannesburg, the Vaal stops being a dull brown highveld river and breaks into channels around a cluster of islands, dropping through a run of rapids that is the best commercial white water within reach of the city. The reason is underfoot: Parys sits inside the rim of the Vredefort Dome, the scar of a two-billion-year-old meteorite impact, and the river is cutting through rock that the impact shattered and tilted. The geology belongs to the dome's own row; what belongs here is the water. Rafting runs year round at the mercy of the level, there is tubing and kayaking for the less committed, and the town behind it has reinvented itself around breakfast, antiques and art galleries for weekending Gauteng. Two things to ask before you book: what the river level is doing, and whether there has been a sewage incident upstream. Both have honest answers and neither is printed on the booking page.

RAFTING, TUBING AND KAYAKING ARE OPERATOR-RUN with launches through the day and ARE GOVERNED ENTIRELY BY THE RIVER LEVEL - high water makes the rapids serious and can stop trips, low water turns them into a float, and no operator can promise either. ASK ABOUT WATER QUALITY TOO: the Vaal has had serious pollution incidents from upstream sewage failures, and reputable operators will tell you straight. The antique shops, galleries and restaurants keep normal trading hours and ARE BUSIEST AT WEEKENDS, with several closing on Mondays or Tuesdays.
