Pasabag (Monks Valley)

A Cluster Of The Best Known Three Headed Fairy Chimneys, Rock Formations Like Mushrooms, With A Hermit'S Cell Carved In One Of Them Dedicated To Saint Simeon And A Short Path Among Stone Cones. A Quick Roadside Stop With A Lot Of Vendors And Photographers · Avanos, Nevsehir

Pasabag, also called Monks Valley, is a field of mushroom-shaped fairy chimneys beside the road between Goreme and Avanos in Cappadocia, roughly 5 to 6 km from Goreme and close to Cavusin and Zelve. Its best-known formations are tall cones of pale tuff capped with darker basalt, and the star is a chimney with three heads rising from a single trunk, the most photographed multi-headed rock in the region. Hermits lived in these cones in Byzantine times, and one of the largest holds a small cell and chapel linked to Saint Simeon, reached by a narrow stair cut inside the rock (confirm access). A short loop path winds among the cones, and a line of stalls sells dried fruit, scarves, ceramics and carved stone, so the stop feels part geology walk and part market. Most visitors stay 20 to 40 minutes on a day trip between Goreme and Avanos, and the quietest hours are right after opening and near closing. Light is best when the sun is low, and the cones turn warm gold against a clear sky.

Pasabag is usually open daily all year, from about 08:00 or 08:30 until about 17:00 in winter and 18:00 to 19:00 in summer, with the last entry shortly before closing - confirm, as hours change by season. A ticket booth stands at the entrance, and a museum pass may be accepted (confirm). The stalls and cafes keep their own hours and mostly follow the daytime visitors, with several closed in January and February. Tour groups arrive between about 10:00 and 12:00, so the early and late hours are calmer. Rain or snow can close the stair to the Saint Simeon cell, and the loop path is slippery when wet.
