The largest wine region in California by area and the one that has grown fastest, with well over two hundred wineries spread across forty thousand acres of hills between Highway 101 and the coast. It made its name on Zinfandel and then on Rhône varieties, and it remains markedly cheaper and less formal than Napa two hours north.
