Patagonia Lake State Park

Arizona State Park; Sonoita Creek State Natural Area · Nogales, Arizona

A lake park in the rolling grassland hills of south-east Arizona, about 15 miles north-east of Nogales. The lake was formed in 1968 by damming Sonoita Creek, and today it offers a swimming beach, boat ramps, fishing, a large campground and campsites reached only by boat. Upstream, the Sonoita Creek State Natural Area protects cottonwood and willow woodland that draws birders looking for Mexican species rarely seen elsewhere in the US. The water is warm in summer, and anglers catch bass, crappie and catfish, with trout stocked in winter. The park is close to the Mexican border, so follow posted notices and expect Border Patrol checkpoints on nearby highways. The wine country of Sonoita and the hummingbird town of Patagonia are a short drive away.
