Patenga Beach

Beach · Chattogram, Chattogram

The city beach of Chattogram at the mouth of the Karnaphuli, where the river's shipping lane meets the Bay of Bengal and half the port city comes down for sunset. Patenga is an urban institution rather than a swimming paradise: a long embankment of concrete wave blocks, a narrow sand strip that mostly drowns at high tide, ship-watching on the anchorage, speedboat and horse rides, and one of the country's liveliest evening street-food scenes. The Karnaphuli Tunnel and airport sit alongside - this is the working sea edge of a working port, and its charm is exactly that.

Patenga Beach Road, Chattogram, Chattogram, Bangladesh

Open at all hours as public shoreline; the living hours are late afternoon through evening, with sunset as the daily event and weekends at full crowd. Free entry; rides and stalls negotiate individually. Low tide gives the sand, high tide takes it - and squall weather clears the embankment.
