Patriots Point and USS Yorktown
National Historic Landmark · Mount Pleasant, South Carolina
An Essex-class aircraft carrier tied up in Charleston harbour with about forty aircraft on her decks, and beside her a destroyer that survived being hit by five kamikazes and three bombs in eighty minutes off Okinawa and is still afloat because her crew refused to let her sink. The Yorktown fought across the Pacific and then, in December 1968, pulled the crew of Apollo 8 out of the water after the first flight around the Moon. The Fort Sumter ferry also leaves from here, which makes this the most useful dock in Charleston.
