Pattani Central Mosque
One Of Thailand'S Largest Mosques, Completed In The 1960s; Travel Advisories Apply To Pattani Province · Pattani, Pattani
The Pattani Central Mosque is one of the largest mosques in Thailand, a broad white building crowned by a large central dome and smaller domes, flanked by minarets and fronted by a long reflecting pool, in the town of Pattani in the far south. It is usually said to have been completed in the 1960s and is the main mosque of a province whose people are mostly Malay-speaking Muslims, with their own language, Patani Malay, written in the Jawi script, and a history as the centre of the old sultanate of Patani. IMPORTANT TRAVEL ADVICE: Pattani, Yala and Narathiwat have seen a long-running insurgency, and many governments advise against all but essential travel to these provinces. Anyone considering a visit must check their own government's current travel advice and make sure their insurance covers the area. Pattani is not a tourist centre; facilities for visitors are limited, and most people who come are on family, work or study trips from Hat Yai.

NO OPENING TIME HERE WAS CHECKED. The typical pattern: the mosque grounds are open daily from before dawn to late evening, the prayer hall is used at the five daily prayers, and non-Muslim visits are best mid-morning or mid-afternoon between prayers; Friday midday is the busiest time of the week. Access can be restricted at short notice for security or ceremonies. The traps that ruin a visit are arriving at Friday midday prayers, being turned away for dress, not checking your government's current travel advice or your insurance cover, and travelling back to Hat Yai after dark. Confirm current times and current advice before relying on them.
