Paynes Prairie Preserve State Park

Florida State Park · Micanopy, Florida

A 21,000-acre wet prairie south of Gainesville that fills and drains on a decade-long cycle, and where free-ranging wild horses and a herd of American bison have lived since they were reintroduced in the 1970s. William Bartram described it in 1774 as the great Alachua Savanna, and it is the only place in Florida where you can watch bison, horses and alligators sharing a single field of view.

100 Savannah Boulevard, Micanopy, Florida, 32667, United States

Open 8:00 a.m. until sundown, 365 days a year. The La Chua Trail has its own separate entrance and closes when the prairie floods.
