Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge
Wildlife Reserve · Rodanthe, North Carolina
Thirteen miles of barrier island between Oregon Inlet and Rodanthe, on the Outer Banks, set aside in 1938 as a wintering ground for greater snow geese and now one of the finest birding sites on the Atlantic coast - well over three hundred and fifty species recorded. It sits directly against Cape Hatteras National Seashore, and its ocean beach is undeveloped and almost always empty. It is free, and most people driving to Hatteras go straight past it.
