Peabody Essex Museum

Art Museum · Salem, Massachusetts

A major art museum in Salem that traces itself to the East India Marine Society of 1799 — a club of sea captains who were required, on joining, to bring back something from beyond the Cape of Good Hope or Cape Horn. That collecting habit ran for two centuries and produced one of the world's great holdings of Asian export art and maritime material. Its single most remarkable object is Yin Yu Tang, a two-hundred-year-old merchant's house taken apart in rural China, shipped here and rebuilt.

161 Essex Street, Salem, Massachusetts, 01970, United States

Open most days with some off-season weekday closures; check before travelling. Modest admission with reductions; Salem residents and under-16s free. YIN YU TANG NEEDS A SEPARATE TIMED TICKET on top of admission and sells out on busy days — book both together. No photography or bags inside Yin Yu Tang. Thirty minutes from Boston by commuter rail.
